On the cover – Acquisition of Rosetta Inpharmatics will help Merck accelerate the pace of innovation: Stella Clarke, research associate, is one of 200 highly skilled scientists at Rosetta Inpharmatics who, using advanced Rosetta-developed technology, are helping Merck scientists more efficiently analyze gene data to predict how medical compounds will interact with different kinds of cells in the body. These data should enable Merck scientists to select drug targets more accurately and speed the development process. Merck acquired Rosetta, a leading informational genomics company, in July 2001.
“We try never to forget that medicine is for the people. It is not for the profits. The profits follow, and if we have remembered that, they have never failed to appear. The better we have remembered that, the larger they have been.”
—George W. Merck, 1950
